![]() ![]() As a necessary consequence, you can expect nothing but the best from the Philippines’ finest.ģ. The four-time Peabody Award-winning GMA News – which is arguably the most trusted and most awarded news organization in the Philippines today – is the home and producer of 24 Oras. This makes 24 Oras a more credible newscast since its anchors have maintained that integrity crucial for a journalist to be trusted.Ģ. While it is true that before these anchors became involved in politics their primary career was broadcasting, their entry into, and eventual exit (for de Castro and Failon) from the dirty and scandal-ridden political arena have left an indelible mark of politics in their names. It is very absurd to know that ABS-CBN News prohibits its anchors and reporters from doing commercial advertisements (since they see this as giving rise to a conflict of interest), but they let personalities from politics to deliver the nightly news. The greatest criticism against TV Patrol is the lineup of its anchors – a former vice president, a former congressman and the wife of a President-wannabe. 24 Oras banks on the credibility and integrity of its anchors. But observing the two newscasts would tell us that the former remains to be a huge stumbling block that TV Patrol has to overcome. And the return of the two most recognizable faces and voices of TV Patrol refueled the competition between the two primetime newscasts.įor four years now, the Mike Enriquez – Mel Tiangco tandem of 24 Oras has been going against TV Patrol’s formidable Noli de Castro, Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon. 24 Oras was very comfortable in the top spot for more than half a decade until Novemwhen Korina Sanchez and Noli de Castro made a comeback. This even led to the Ted Failon-Karen Davila-Julius Babao trio (Actually, it is a rarity in newscasts to have three anchors, but it was done to make a failed bid to forestall the possibility of 24 Oras being the top news source in the country.). Just after six months since it was launched, 24 Oras proved to be the best challenger to TV Patrol’s supremacy. When GMA News launched 24 Oras in March 2004 to go against ABS-CBN’s then 17-year old TV Patrol, the Kapuso news department saw the tide going in its favor. The battle of the primetime newscasts has been ongoing for quite some time already, and it is not seen to end anytime soon. ![]()
